Govt studying impact of microplastics, new pollutants on water quality
Malaysians have a role alongside the Government to protect our water resources, as new research by the National Water Research Institute of Malaysia (Nahrim) reveals alarming microplastic levels in our rivers, with pollution ranging from 179.6 to 4,541.4 particles per litre in key river basins, including the Klang and Langat Rivers.
Deputy Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Fadillah Yusof emphasised the urgent need for further research into the effects of microplastics and other pollutants on both people and the environment.
Meanwhile, Nahrim director-general Mohd Zaki Mat Amin warns that excessive plastic use and a low recycling rate (35.38% in 2023) threaten the health of our waters.
Let’s do our part to reduce plastic usage and improve recycling rates!
