Hidden Plastic Deep In The Ground

Hidden plastic deep in the ground

Despite major operations to close down illegal dump sites in Kuala Langat, local activists say there remains significant plastic waste buried deep in the soil in addition to new pop-up sites. One activist, Pua Lay Peng of the Kuala Langat Environmental Action Group, said her team is actively on the lookout for illegal sites and activities, including illegal e-waste processing. ????

Senior lecturer Dr Shamila Azman from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia warns that buried plastics can break down into microplastics, contaminating soil and groundwater. To combat this, the public is urged to opt for reusable items, choose natural fibres for clothing and install microfibre filters in washing machines, avoid products containing microbeads, and properly dispose of waste.

Every action counts in protecting our environment and health. ????♻️
